San Luis Obispo Volunteer Opportunities
CASA of San Luis Obispo County provides volunteer advocates to abused and neglected children ages 0 to 18 and volunteer mentors for former foster youth over age 18.CASA also has a Guild dedicated to outreach and fundraising to support the CASA program. Training for both programs is provided by CASA. Volunteers must commit to serving as an advocate or mentor for at least one year after completion of training.

The Family Care Network, Inc., (FCNI) a local nonprofit agency serving foster youths and families, needs a Reading Specialist. This opportunity asks for a minimum 1-year commitment and that volunteers be willing to meet twice a week for an hour each meeting. Volunteers applying to be a Reading Specialist with FCNI should have a passion for reading and reading instruction, be willing to follow prescribed methodology, be compassionate to kids who are struggling academically and understand the culture of failure, be enthusiastic and encouraging, and appreciate small successes. This opportunity offers a mileage reimbursement rate for volunteers who travel outside of their city, throughout San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara counties. Volunteers will receive approximately 30 hours of initial training and continual trainings every six months. Volunteers will be required to report to Program Staff at least once a month and submit monthly logs of contacts and trainings.
Volunteer Requirements: We are looking for volunteers that have a heart for children and are healthy role models. There is a screening process which includes: application, reference check, interview, fingerprinting, drug screening, etc. Training for position will be provided by FCNI.
